We Need a Technology Enabled Active Learning (TEAL) Classroom!

It’s time to level up our tech classroom!

Help us get out of the traditional lecture style, 16-seat computer classroom and into a newly designed technology enabled active learning (TEAL) classroom with the goal of creating a hands-on learning experience for our communication students. Imagine a classroom of four students seated around each table with their own laptops and a shared screen on the wall so they can both learn from the instructor and share ideas, current projects and refine their newly acquired digital skills.

We envision the new TEAL classroom will help the Department of Communication offer an experiential learning environment that will host a variety of classes in digital skills that are essential to today’s workforce, namely Gen Z. These classes include video editing, graphic design, social media, new media production, website design, and more.

Why should donors support this fund?

Technology Enabled Active Learning

At the core of TEAL design are active learning practices that emphasize peer interaction—students are comfortable asking each other questions and learn well by getting to observe others. Added to the mix is technology—in our case, new high end MacBook Pros that we invested in just this summer—that are paired with wireless sharing technology and flatscreen displays so that students and the professor can seamlessly share work with each other. This is especially advantageous for the types of courses the Communication department teaches, which involve hands-on projects and real-world application in the classroom.

Student-First Design

Our new classroom design puts students first—with accessibility and equity as a primary goal. All too often, we employ a one size fits all for institutional furnishings, assuming students are all of a standard weight, height, ability, handedness, and are neurotypical. Our new learning tables will be height adjustable and mobile, allowing students to choose the setup that works best for them. We will add a mix of seating types with adjustable heights and without arms, allowing students to comfortably fit in their chairs and adjust to the best ergonomic position for computer-based classes. We will also provide some active sitting stools for students that find sitting for long periods of time difficult for focus. The screens and speakers at each table mean that all students can see and hear audiovisual materials clearly no matter where they are seated. And the laptops create an equitable experience for all students with standardized software and processing power.

How will funds be used?

To help us get to our goal, we are raising money for the core technology that creates a TEAL space—the flatscreen displays and the wireless technology that allows for student screen mirroring to the displays and syncing of each display to the instructor’s screen.

Our wish list:

  • 5 50" Flatscreen TVs: $350 each
  • 6 Screenbeam 1100 Devices: $1,200 each
  • 1 86" Interactive Touchscreen Instructor Display: $2,500

Giving Day 2023 Update

The funds from the 2023 Giving Day supported students in our chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and allowed them to attend the national conference for the professional society. Four students majoring in Communication and Business were able to attend with fully funded conference fees and gain access to networking and professional development opportunities: Audrey Norton (Communication, Health Communication), Colin Squyres (Communication, Public Relations), Jasmine Allen (Communication, Public Relations), Lily El-Masri (Business Administration). Also featured in images is Jennifer Heinly, PRSSA faculty advisor for Vanguard.

“ICON was a great experience to network and get connected with other students who are looking to propel their career. While at ICON, I was reminded of the importance of utilizing the resources at my disposal as a PRSSA member. Most importantly, I was reminded that as a PRSSA member, I am surrounded by students and professionals in the PR industry who want to help each other and work with one another. I attended sessions that provided tips on how to effectively plan events and grow our student chapter. Networking with other students at these sessions was exciting as we were all happy to connect with each other. Overall, ICON was a fun and insightful experience where I gained great advice and new connections!” Audrey Norton '25

“ICON was a unique opportunity to gain an inside look at the PR world. We heard from current PR professionals, as well as fellow PRSSA student leaders and members from schools all over the nation. A highlight for me was the discussions that developed based on questions asked by students. This was both interesting and educational, as the concerns and questions raised by other PRSSA leaders during the question-and-answer portions furthered discussions on relevant PR issues and situations. Every session and room was essentially packed with students and PRSA members. Getting the chance to attend a conference like this with my school is truly a privilege, and I am glad I was able to go to the national conference this year.” Colin Squyres '25
